In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballingarry like this:

Ballingarry, old castle, N. co. Kerry, 5 miles NE. of Kerry Head; built by Col. Crosbie during the rebellion of 1641, it is now a coastguard sta.
