In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Castlemaine like this:

Castlemaine, vil., 8 miles S. of Tralee, W. co. Kerry, on river Maine, pop. 159; P.O. Castlemaine Harbour is 2 miles SW., at the upper end of Dingle Bay.
