In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hook like this:
HOOK, a hamlet in the N of Hants; near the Southwestern railway and the Basingstoke canal, 2 miles NW of Odiham. It has a post office under Winchfield.
