In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Portarlington like this:

Portarlington, market town with ry. sta., Lea par., Queen's co., and Clonyhurk par., King's co., on river Barrow and near a branch of the Grand Canal, 42 miles SW. of Dublin, 455 ac., pop. 2357; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. Portarlington returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
