In 1837, Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described Colehill like this:

COLE-HILL, a post-town, in the parish of Teighshinod, barony of MOYDOW, county of LONGFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 12 ½ miles (W. by N.) from Mullingar, and 51 miles (W. by N.) from Dublin: the population is returned with the parish. It is situated on the road from Dublin to Ballymahon, and has a sub-post-office to the latter town and to Ballinacargy.
