In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballymote like this:

Ballymote.-- market town, Enlaghfad par., in mid. of co. and 14 miles S. of Sligo and 120 miles NW. of Dublin by rail, pop. 1145; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday. In the vicinity are ruins of a castle and an abbey.
