In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Muckross like this:

Muckross, peninsula, between the Middle and the Lower Lakes of Killarney, mid. co. Kerry, 3 miles S. of Killarney; P.O.; situated upon it are the fine ruins of Muckross Abbey, and the seat of Muckross Abbey.
