In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Clare like this:

Clare, island (6 miles by 3 miles), in Clew Bay, Kilgever par., W. co. Mayo, 3946 ac., pop. 621; P.O., called Clare Island. On the N. point is a lighthouse, with a fixed light seen at a distance of 27 miles.
