In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Mullet like this:

Mullet, The, peninsula, bar. Erris, NW. co. Mayo, between Broad Haven and Blacksod Bay; 12 miles long, and from 1 to 6 miles broad; is joined to the mainland by an isthmus 1200 yds. broad.
