In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Blacksod Bay like this:

Blacksod Bay, har. Erris, Nw. co. Mayo, about 10 miles long and 6 miles in extreme breadth; has lighthouse on Termon Pier, just within Blacksod Point, with fixed light (Blacksod Point) seen 10 miles.
