In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Giants Causeway like this:

Giant's Causeway, prom. of columnar basalt, or N. coast of co. Antrim, 2½ miles NE. of Bushmills; presents three natural piers, consisting of many thou. sands of curiously formed basaltic columns closely piled together, and projecting from the base of a lofty cliff into the sea. It is annually visited by great numbers of tourists, and at the Causeway there is a hotel. An electric tramway extends between Giant's Causeway and Portrush ry. sta.
