In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Buttevant like this:

Buttevant, market town and par., N. co. Cork, on river Awbeg, 27 miles N. of Cork and 138 miles SW. of Dublin by rail -- par., 11,582 ac., pop. 2695; town, pop. 1409; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Tuesday and Friday. Here are fine remains of an abbey, and the modernised seat of B. Castle. B. is a garrison town.
