In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Raphoe like this:
Raphoe, market-town, seat of a diocese, and par., North Raphoe bar., E. co. Donegal, 6½ miles NW. of Strabane sta. and 15 SW. of Londonderry - par., 13,225 ac., pop. 3399; town, pop. 986; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Raphoe is situated in a fertile district. The see of Raphoe was united to that of Derry in 1835.
