In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Saintfield like this:

Saintfield, market town and par. with ry. sta., N. co. Down, 11 miles by road and 15 by rail SE. of Belfast - par., 13,333 ac., pop. 3932; town, pop. 769; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Monday; was the scene of a skirmish in 1798. Saintfield House, seat, is 1 m. N. of town.
