In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bective like this:

Bective, par., seat, and ry. sta., mid. co. Meath, 3 miles S. of Navan, on river Boyne, 3385 ac., pop. 385. Bective Abbey is a fine ruin.
