In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballysadare like this:

Ballysadare, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in co. and 4 miles SW. of Sligo, on river Owenmore -- par., 16,019 ac., pop. 4144; vil., pop. 454. In vicinity is the abbey of St Fechin. Ballysadare Ray lies in the S. of Sligo Bay, and is about 7 miles long.
