In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Devils Bit Mountains like this:

Devil's Bit Mountains, N. co. Tipperary, on SW. border of King's co., greatest alt. 2084 ft.; so-called from a peculiar gap in the ridge.
