In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bulverhythe like this:

Bulverhithe, manor, 2 miles W. of Hastings, E. Sussex. On the hill, by the ry. sta., are the ruins of the chapel supposed to mark the spot where William the Conqueror landed.
