In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Theobalds like this:
Theobalds, seat of the Meux family, in par. and 2 miles SW. of Cheshunt, Herts; was originally built by Lord Burleigh, and became the residence of James I., who died here in 1625.
