In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Appleton like this:
APPLETON, or Hull and Appleton, a township in Great Budworth parish, Cheshire; near the Bridgewater canal, 3 miles SE of Warrington. Acres, 3,324. Real property, £9,571. Pop., 1,828. Houses, 376. Here are Appleton Lodge, and Independent, Baptist, and Wesleyan chapels.
