In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Moorsley like this:
MOORSLEY, a township in Honghton-le-Spring parish, Durhamshire; on the Great North of England railway, 4¾ miles NE of Durham. Acres, 588. Real property, £1,408; of which £144 are on the railway. Pop., 973. Houses, 185. Some of the inhabitants are employed in neighbouring collieries and quarries.
