In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Aston like this:
ASTON, a parish in the district and county of Hertford; on the river Beane, 3 miles SE of Stevenage, and 4 SE by S of Stevenage r. station. Post Town, Stevenage. Acres, 2,052. Real property, £3,697. Pop., 639. Houses, 122. The manor belonged to the Saxon kings; was given, by the queen of Henry I., to Reading abbey; and passed, at the dissolution, to the Botelers of Walton. ...
The manor-house, at Aston Place, is a building of older date than the time of Henry VIII. Six large barrows, supposed to be Danish, occur contiguous to the public road. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester. Value, £380.* Patron, the Rev. G. A. Oddie.
