In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Tunstall like this:
TUNSTALL, a township in Bishop-Wearmouth parish, Durham; 2½ miles SW by S of Sunderland. Acres, 801. Real property, £1,720 Pop., 94. Houses, 15. Maiden Paps here are two round-topped limestone rocks, which serve as a landmark to mariners entering Sunderland harbour.
