In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Westgate on Sea like this:
Westgate on Sea, watering-place with ry. sta., Margate par., Kent, 2 miles SW. of Margate by rail, pop. 1670; P.O., T.O., Bank. Westgate occupies a pleasant situation on a small semi-circular bay, is practically a suburb of Margate, and is a place of recent growth. It consists of fine villas, has an esplanade, a pier, and all the requisites of a popular place of resort.
