In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Whitfield like this:
WHITFIELD, a parish in Dover district, Kent; 2 miles NNE of Ewell r. station, and 3½ N by W of Dover. It has a post-office under Dover. Acres, 893. Real property, £1,876. Pop., 264. Houses, 54. The property is divided among a few. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £150. Patron, the Archbishop. The church is good; and there is an Independent chapel.
