In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Little Bentley like this:
BENTLEY (Little), a parish in Tendring district, Essex; 2¾ miles NNE of Bentley r. station, and 7½ E of Colchester. It has a post office under Colchester. Acres, 2,012. Real property, £3,453. Pop., 458. Houses, 101. The property is much subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester. Value, £650.* Patron, Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The church is good.
