In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Withernsea like this:
WITHERNSEA, a township-chapelry, with a village, in Hollym parish, E. R. Yorkshire; on the coast, at the terminus of the Hulland Holderness railway, 4 miles N E. by N of Patrington. It has a post-office‡ under Hull, a r. station with telegraph, a large hotel, and a handsome modern church; and it has come into considerable notice as a sea-bathing resort. Acres, 1,210. Real property, £1,334. Pop., 202. Houses, 44. The living is annexed to Hollym.
