In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Semer like this:
SEMER, a parish, with a village, in Cosford district, Suffolk; on the river Bret, 3 miles N N W of Hadleigh r.station. It has a post-office under Ipswich. Acres, 1, 248. Real property, £2, 260. Pop. in 1851, 558; in 1861, 429, of whom 1 72 were in the Cosford workhouse. Houses, 54. The property is subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. Value, £385.* Patron, the Rev. J. G. Cooke. The church is Norman and good.
