In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Somersham like this:
SOMERSHAM, a parish, with a village, in Bosmere district, Suffolk; 3¾ miles NE by N of Hadleigh r. station. Post town, Ipswich. Acres, 1,027. Real property, £2,017. Pop., 366. Houses, 98. The property is much subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value, £280.* Patron, the Rev. N. J. Stubbin. There are chapels for Independents and Baptists.
