In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rudyard like this:
RUDYARD, a township in Leek parish, Stafford; adjacent to the Churnet Valley railway, and to the reservoir of the Uttoxeter canal, 2½ miles N W of Leek. It has a station on the railway . Real property, £1, 358. Pop., 94. Houses, 14. The manor belongs to the Earl of Macclesfield. The canal reservoir is 2 miles long, and from 200 to 300 feet wide.
