In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bellingham like this:

Bellingham, par., township, and vil. with ry. sta., S. Northumberland, 16 miles NW. of Hexham, 20,481 ac., pop. 1493 -- township, 2352 ac., pop. 728; pop. of vil. 458; P.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Has coal, ironstone, and limestone.
