In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Fawdon like this:

FAWDON, a township in Gosforth parish, Northumberland; 3 miles NNW of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Acres, 522. Pop. in 1851, 254; in 1861, 486. Houses, 113. The increase of pop. arose from the extension of collieries. A fossil tree was found here at the forming of a coal-shaft.
