In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Lyneham like this:
LYNEHAM, a hamlet in Shipton-under-Wychwood parish, Oxford; on the river Evenlode, 4¼ miles SW of Chipping-Norton. Acres, 1,650. Real property, £2,204. Pop., 237. Houses, 50. A schoolroom is here, and is used as a chapel of ease.
