According to Youngs, Hunslet was created as a Poor Law unit only in 1862. It was listed as a Registration District in 1851, and in all subsequent censuses, but its history as a Registration District between 1862 and 1869 was very complex. Strictly speaking, the unit that existed in 1851 and 1861 was re-named Kirkstall in 1862 and abolished in 1869. However, a new 'Hunslet' was simultaneously created in 1862 and enlarged in 1869, so we treat Hunslet as having a continuous existence and Kirkstall RD as existing only between 1862 and 1869.
