nCube definition

The early censuses 1801-31 used this very simple classification of occupations. It is unclear which persons were instructed to be included, but in 1801 the total of the three occupational categories exactly matched the total population in most parishes. This may explain why from 1811 onwards the British census applied the classification to families rather than persons, although the Irish census continued to count persons.
