Parts of Lindsey. Youngs' says this unit is an ancient parish, the civil part of which was abolished in 1888 to create a new Barton Upon Humber CP. However, Lincolnshire Archives disagree "Barton on Humber has always been a single parish, with St Peter's church as the parish church and St Mary's church (originally dedicated to All Saints) being a chapel. Confusion arose in 1863 when the court of Queen's Bench gave a ruling that St Mary's was a parish church, but this decision arose in connection with a dispute over the Poor Law. The authoritative 'St Peter's, Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire: A Parish Church and its Community', volume 1, part 1 (Oxbow Books, Oxford, 2011) states that St Peter's "served as the sole parish church of Barton from the early medieval period, until 1972." In that year Saint Peter's church was declared redundant and for the first time St Mary's became a parish church." (James Stevenson, Lincolnshire Archives, 31/01/2014). Therefore the record has been altered to match the Archives description.
