Notes

The divisions of the moorland in the Aysgarth area were poorly defined, and the census reports often list units for which they do not provide separate statistics. Mossdale Moor was listed as a separate unit by Youngs and by the 1891 census, the latter putting it in Askrigg sub-District. In 1901, what seems to be the same area was described as 'part of Widdaleside Allotment', still in Askrigg. In 1911, 1921 and 1931 Mossdale Moor was combined with Wether Fell and listed under Hawes, so the combined area is treated here as a new unit.
