nCube definition

The exact meaning of 'able-bodied', as used in the Poor Law system, is controversial, but is generally understood to exclude the aged and infirm, and 'lunatics', but to include large numbers who were temporarily ill. The reports consistently divide the able-bodied into those receiving indoor relief, those on outdoor relief and, in earlier years, those receiving both.
