nCube
:
Persons of Working Age by Country of Birth
nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of
Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables.
For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census
reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one
dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other
variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many
dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of
death, or just one.

Country of birth in this dataset is intended to capture the impact of Brexit on
EU-UK migration of people of working age (16-64 years).
Respondents to the Annual Population Survey are asked what country they were born in.
People not born in the UK or Republic of Ireland are classified as either
born in the European Union (EU) or outside the EU (non-EU).
The EU is defined as the countries that were in the EU when the UK left the EU single market
– which granted freedom of movement to live, work or study in any EU Member State – at the end of December 2020.
Those born in the Republic of Ireland are not included in the born in the EU category for the
purposes of these data on the basis that the Common Travel Area agreement between the UK and
Republic of Ireland maintains the mutual right to live, work and study in
either country without an immigration visa.
In order to best reflect the impact of Brexit on EU-UK migration, country of birth rather than
nationality was used because many EU nationals applied for British citizenship following Brexit.
Neither country of birth or nationality perfectly captures people who lost the freedom of movement
between the UK and the EU following Brexit, since some people born outside the UK have
British citizenship and some people born in the UK do not.
Data labelled as born in the EU is the population aged 16-64 years born in the EU
(excluding the UK and the Republic of Ireland).
Data labelled as born outside the EU is the population aged 16-64 years born outside the EU.
The population that falls neither in the EU or non-EU categories are, by definition,
born in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.

Data map listing
Each of our datasets, or nCubes, combines one or more variables (Var)
each of which consists of a set of categories. The data map lists all the
possible combinations of categories. The cell references are the identifiers
held in our main table of statistics, recording what each number measures.
