Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for PETTERIL (The)

PETTERIL (The), a river of Cumberland. It rises in two head-streams, in Greystoke Park and in the vicinity of Penruddock; runs 5½ miles north-eastward to a point2¾ miles N by W of Penrith; goes thence, 16 miles north-north-westward, to a confluence with the Eden at Carlisle; and is closely followed, over all these 16 miles, by the Lancaster and Carlisle railway .
