In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Neston like this:
NESTON, a parish and a sub-district in Wirral district, Cheshire. The parish lies on the estuary of the Dee, and on the Hooton and Parkgate branch of the Birkenhead, Chester, and Crewe railway, around the town of Great Neston; and contains the townships of Great Neston, Little Neston, Ness, Willaston, Ledsham, Raby, Thornton-Hough, and Leighton. ...
Acres, 15, 293; of which 3, 920 are water. Real property, £21, 955. Pop. in 1851, 3, 578; in 1861, 4,049. Houses, 795. The landed property is divided chiefly among ten; and there are several manors. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester. Value, £753.* Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Chester. The p. curacy of Willaston is a separate benefice. The parish church, a Wesleyan chapel, and national schools are in Great Neston; a church, an Independent chapel, and a national school are in Willaston; a chapel-room and a Presbyterian chapel are in Parkgate, Leighton; and a new church and schools, and a Wesleyan chapel are in Thornton-Hough. Charities, £42.—The sub-district contains also Burton and Heswall parishes. Acres, 24, 170. Pop., 5, 223. Houses, 1,008.
