In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Withernwick like this:
WITHERNWICK, a parish in Skirlaugh district, E. R. Yorkshire; 1¼ mile ESE of Whitedale r. station, and 5¼ SSW of Hornsea. Post town, Hornsea, under Hull. Acres, 2,600. Real property, £4,580. Pop., 499. Houses, 113. The manor belongs to W. Bethell, Esq. Bricks and tiles are made. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £300.* Patron, the Archbishop. There are two Methodist chapels, a national school, and charities £12.
