In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Liff like this:
Liff, Benvie, and Invergowrie, par. and vil. with ry. sta. (Liff), Forfarshire - par. (containing the Logie and Lochee suburbs of Dundee), 7074 ac., pop. 43,190; the vil. (Liff) is 1¾ mile NW. of sta., which is 4½ miles NW. of Dundee; 1 mile NE. of Liff is Muirhead of Lift, place with school.
