In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Bootham like this:
BOOTHAM, a subdistrict in the district of York. It comprises 12 parishes, parts of three other parishes, and two extra-parochial tracts within the borough of York, and Huntingdon parish beyond. Acres, 9,447. Pop., 14,425. Houses, 2,548.
