In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Askeaton like this:

Askeaton, par. and town, N. co. Limerick, 6478 ac., pop. 1638. The town stands on the river Deel, 3m. above its confluence with the Shannon, 15 miles by road and 20 miles by rail WSW. of Limerick; pop. 891; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Tuesday. Its castle is a fine ruin.
