In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Whitburn like this:
Whitburn, par. and vil. (police burgh) with ry. sta., Linlithgowshire - par., 9775 ac., pop. 6326; vil., on river Almond, 3½ miles SW. of Bathgate, pop. 1200; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. The par. abounds in coal and ironstone.
