In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Belmullet like this:

Belmullet, fishing vil., Kilcommon par., NW. co. Mayo, 49 miles NW. of Ballina, pop. 852; P.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. It is situated on the isthmus which joins the Mullet peninsula to the mainland.
