In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pegswood like this:
Pegswood, township and mining vil., Bothal par., Northumberland, 2 miles NE. of Morpeth, 1236 ac., pop. 968; P.O., called Pegswood Colliery.
